Studio Egret West designs new library and civic hub for South London

The Library Building is a major council led exemplar scheme for the London Borough of Lambeth who are working in partnership with Cathedral (Clapham) Ltd. to deliver a new public library (Clapham Library), a new health centre (The Clapham Family Practice), a new PCT Resource Centre and 136 homes for the community.

The design resolves the mix of community uses with the provision of a high density development; it resolves a mix of adjacent building scales with the opportunity for a high density development. It is scheme that resolves many issues that confront contemporary mixed use schemes in London, finding a solution in a design of the highest quality. The design meets an 'Excellent' rating (18.5 out of 20) in the Building For Life assessment. The scheme provides apartments with a CFSH Level 4 along with a library and health centre with BREEAM ratings of Very Good.

The library forms a major new community use on the high street, it is based around a simple spiral form, providing a seamless curve of learning. The spiral is used to link a variety of uses in the building with the books themselves providing a continuous linear coil around which other spaces are configured.
