NSIAP create a dual-purpose police facility in Guangdong Province
The brief for the project was to provide housing for 250 maintenance workers and their supervisors for this new city on the east coast of Shunde district, Foshan. A district police station was also to be located near to the hostel. The location of the site sits at the entrance of the proposed new town of east coast. The site given is a longish one, and the placing of the buildings tries to give an institutional feel while also achieving a variety of scales to the various blocks.
The main block of the workers housing is a long linear block whose facade is broken down by alternating screens that front a drying yard for the workers. The three smaller blocks to the front of the building house the supervisors’ blocks, which connect to the main block by bridges.
The workers hostel building forms a courtyard to the north of the site which is used as activities for
a playground and parade square for the workers drills. The semi-enclosed spaces to the south of
the building are intended as recreational spaces for the workers to lounge around in the evenings.
The ground floor of the workers building acts as an open space for the workers' social activities
and overlooks the square on the north.
The district police station is located on the eastern end of the site and forms a portal with the
workers’ housing. This is also the vehicular entrance to the site. The police station sits on a public
plaza and the entrance, a 4-storey glass box, is intended as an extension of the plaza. The roof
level of the police station houses the cafeteria and lounge for the officers.
