Cooper Hewitt names winners of 2010 National Design Award

The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum has named the winners of its National Design Awards. As in previous years, this years winners include industry icons and emerging designers.

The 2010 National Design Award recipients are Kieran Timberlake for architecture, which recently landed the commission to design the US Embassy in London; William Scofield for interior design, who has designed more than 900 boutiques for such clients as Gucci and Bottega Veneta; and Steven Doyle for communication design; whose clients include The New York Times, AIGA, and Vanity Fair.

Rodarte took the top award in the category of fashion design. Founded in 2005 by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Rodarte is an up and coming American fashion house which has received the 2009 Womenswear Designer of the Year Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and the prestigious Swiss Textiles Award in 2008. Smart Design took the award for product design. It has designed products for Oxo Good Grips kitchen tools as well as the New York City taxi graphics. Lisa Strausfeld of Pentagram took top honors in the category of Interactive Design and James Corner Field Operations, which designed New York’s High Line, scooped the award for landscape design. Also honored were Ralph Caplan in the category of Design Mind and Jane Thompson in the category of Lifetime Achievement. The US Green Building Council received the Corporate Achievement award.

The Award recipients will be honoured at a gala dinner on 14 October at Cipriani’s in New York. First Lady Michele Obama will serve as the Honorary Patron for the event.
