Whitearchitecture designs a series of integrated sustainable pavilions featured in Australia's world-class Gold Coast Park
The Broadwater Parklands will serve as an iconic gateway for the Gold Coast and rejuvenate a popular destination, where events, history and water combine to create an active green waterfront. The Parklands contemporary, sustainable built forms were designed by Whitearchitecture and include the Pier Pavilion, which houses a rooftop function space, display gallery and visitor centre, an outdoor performance stage, the new Southport Pier, amenities and BBQ pavilions.
With its spectacular Nerang River frontage and proximity to the Southport CBD, the masterplan, landscape and urban design – led by AECOM’s Design + Planning practice – integrates the Parklands within the city and local community.
The site was previously home to a large asphalt carpark and linked to the city via a dangerous underpass. The design team encouraged the inclusion of a pedestrian-friendly, at-grade connection with the CBD. The result is an equitable and impressive entry plaza continuing the main processional axis through the Park, past the Pier Pavilion terminating 150m into the Broadwater at the new Southport Pier.
The site’s numerous environmental initiatives include an urban wetland and water polishing system that receives the Southport CBD’s stormwater runoff, treating it before releasing it into the Broadwater. All shelters are lined with 300 photovoltaic panels to generate energy for use within the parkland and all runoff treated is through biofiltration landscape basins at the foot of each shelter.
The Parklands will also play host to major sporting and cultural events to engage the community and encourage tourism. The park is an active landscape with event lawns, bathing boxes, barbeque shelters and play equipment, extensive walking and cycling networks, a constructed wetland and bioretention basins throughout the car parks and parklands.
