New transparent link bridge at St Charles Community Hospital completed

A new link bridge, designed by HLM Architects for NHS Kensington and Chelsea as part of the £15m redevelopment of the East Pavilion at the St Charles’ Centre for Health and Wellbeing - a Grade II listed former Victorian hospital in West London - has been completed. The project was built by Interserve Project Services via ProCure21.

The bridge is an essential part of the redevelopment, helping to expand use of the upper storeys of the Eastern Pavilions, and enabling parts of the building that were empty to be put to good use, including providing a new renal dialysis unit, new GP facilities, diagnostic, outpatient services and an Urgent Care Centre.

The new bridge is supported with four circular steel columns spaced evenly in pairs on each side, echoing the existing cast iron bridges, which bear on the existing bricks walls to the existing Ground Floor link. To provide a visually transparent intervention, the elevations and the roof are clad with a proprietary double-glazed structural glazing system, hung off the new structural frame. Additional support is provided by glass fins, connected to the main steel structure, to maintain the transparent nature of the design.
