Piano-designed bridge for Chicago Art Institute breaks ground

The Art Institute of Chicago broke ground today on the Nichols Bridgeway, a pedestrian bridge that will connect Chicago’s famed Millenium Park to the Museum’s new Modern Wing also by Piano. Both projects are scheduled to open in mid-2009. The Bridge will rise over a section of Millenium Park, cross Monroe Street and connect to the third floor of the Art Institute’s Modern Wing, where visitors will find a public sculpture terrace and dining facilities. The year round structure, which will be constructed of white-painted steel, stainless steel mesh and aluminum planking, will be approximately 620 feet long and 15 feet wide. It will feature anti slip technology, heating elements to prevent freezing and universal accessibility.
