Watkins Gray to lead major redevelopment of derelict hospital site, North London
Watkins Gray International has been appointed by Fairview New Homes Ltd as architects and lead consultants for the production stage of the £70m redevelopment of a dilapidated hospital site in Colindale, North London. Watkins Gray International will deliver the approved planning scheme from Stage D through to completion. The 4.3 ha mixed tenure redevelopment will create a brand new urban quarter comprising 714 new apartments and houses, including 9 units within a refurbished and listed administration building.
The new build elements will range from 3 storey houses through to 10 storey apartment blocks, situated around new podium covered car parking. The scheme will help create a new neighbourhood centre, and includes an energy centre which will contain combined heat and power plant providing hot water heating to the whole site, with capacity to also serve future development.
Wendy Charlton, partner at Watkins Gray International, said: “Colindale Hospital has lain mostly derelict since the 1990s. The site is now being cleared to make way for this new development, which will greatly improve the immediate urban environment with new public and private open spaces and landscaping, and new access roads. All of the apartments will meet Sustainable Homes Code Level 3 and all of the houses Code level 4, therefore achieving good standards in energy efficiency”.
The redevelopment at the Colindale Hospital site achieved planning permission in November 2009 from the London Borough of Barnet. The scheme is scheduled for completion in 2014.
