Athletic building at Belgium school brings sports inside and out
The KA Hiel School in Brussels acts as a green space in an urban context. The campus area of features great differences in height as well as much diversity in buildings and pavilions. The construction at the edges of the building block varies from attached houses to tall, apartment towers.
According to the campus plan, the new sports hall, designed by dmva-architecten of Belgium, is inserted to the site as an autonomous object. By positioning it in the sloping terrain, it affects the building-volume as a downscaling method. The new sports hall shows a harmonious transition between the main building and the small-scaled, nursery school. The opening of the sports hall takes place via a natural incision in the sloping terrain.
The closed building manifests itself on the outside as a flexible building.. The internal playing field has been transferred to the outside walls. The concrete volume features coloured sport fields lines that can be used as a tennis wall, a soccer wall, climbing wall. It aims to inspire the students and be respectful of the environment.
The structure of the roof consists of a wooden frame, suspended from upside-down beams. This roof structure gives the building a sculptural character.
