Green light for expansion at Jodrell Bank Observatory, inspiring our future star-gazers
Planning permission has been granted for two new Visitor and Exhibition Pavilions for The University of Manchester’s famous Jodrell Bank Observatory. Cheshire East Council gave the thumbs up to the design, which was drawn up by Feilden Clegg Bradley working in partnership with The University of Manchester, despite the fact that funding is still being sought for the project.
The 1,000 sq m development includes a Planet Pavilion entrance, complete with orientation centre and sleek glass-walled cafe, a Space Pavilion with multi-purpose exhibition, event and education space and the landscaping of the Arboretum to create a new Galaxy Maze and a Space Garden. It is hoped that the new complex will inspire young scientists and showcase cutting-edge research whilst attracting thousands of additional visitors to the site – part of the university’s School of Physics and Astronomy.
Dr Teresa Anderson, Director of the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, said: “This is a really important milestone for us and we're absolutely delighted that our project is moving forward. Alongside plans to redevelop our facilities, we will be taking the opportunity to revitalise our visitor programme, and we look forward to welcoming lots of new people to Jodrell Bank in the future.”
