Ever wanted to retain your façade's dramatic copper colouring? Luvata show you how...
One of the most exciting recent developments for copper as a modern architectural material is Nordic Royal, an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, which is very stable and keeps its warm golden shade. Unlike pure copper, which develops a dark brown colour with oxidisation followed by its distinctive green patina, Nordic Royal has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the elements to give a matt finish, as demonstrated by accelerated weathering tests.
Nordic Royal exhibits excellent performance characteristics including durability and resistance to abrasion, as well as copper’s ease of working at any temperature and impressive environmental credentials. Although the copper industry is well known for its recycling practices, Luvata’s Nordic range of copper architectural products is exceptional with 97% of copper produced for roofing and cladding applications during 2008 and 2009 coming from recycled material.
The first project using this Nordic Royal alloy in the UK is a symbolic lakeside shelter informed by a fairytale created by the designers Studio Weave. Preformed trays of Nordic Royal sheets have been used to wrap the roof, sides and underside of Freya’s Cabin – one of two allegorical visitors’ shelters overlooking Kielder Water. The sheets were perforated to symbolise the golden tears of Freya, whose sadness derived from apparent rejection by her lover Robin from his simple timber shelter on the opposing bank of the lake. Fortunately, the story does have a happy ending with the lovers united!
Nordic Royal is the latest in a series of surfaces developed by Luvata, working alongside architects to help meet their design aspirations. They include the innovative Nordic Green PLUS which offers architects the ability to control the type and intensity of patina with no limitations on the length of pre-patinated copper sheet. The same flexibility is available with Nordic Blue PLUS as well. Other surfaces include Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper with either light or dark brown oxidisation to both faces, Brass alloy and Nordic Decor a textured, rolled surface. And all these finishes can be supplied in shingles, cassettes and panels – such as diamond shapes, profiled or press modelled for three-dimensional faces, or in the form of pierced or expanded transparent sheets – as well as flat surfaces.
