a:b:i:r architects secure planning permission for health centre in Polegate, East Sussex.

a:b:i:r architects have secured planning permission for a 1989 sq m health centre in Polegate in East Sussex. The proposals are for demolition of the existing buildings and construction of a health centre and six affordable housing units. The Polegate Primary Care Resource Centre will house two local practices currently in undersized and inadequate premises. These practices will maintain their own identities but will benefit from shared areas and facilities such as main entrance, waiting areas, meeting rooms and a minor operations suite. There is also an independently run pharmacy and space for healthcare partnerships.

The proposed layout and form reflect the long and narrow nature of the site and the design is a conscious attempt to get away from the monolithic architecture of the existing building by responding to the wider site context. The health centre will sit close to the main access from Eastbourne Road but away from the bungalows to the north. This allows for a more public frontage for the surgery and pharmacy, while creating a buffer to the bungalows that sit at considerably lower level allowing the public face of the building to be clearly visible to visitors but having minimal impact on the surrounding residential properties.

Internally the spaces are generally either north or south facing, optimising the daylight within the building. The section is designed to allow a central void to flood the waiting area with light. Furthermore with the shared spaces located towards the southwest part of the building, medical staff can enjoy views of the existing grade II listed windmill to the south. The proposed health centre makes reference to the local building scale and massing in a contemporary style. The building forms relate in plan and elevation to the building forms of the neighbouring properties.
