Recently completed flagship facility attempts to modernise NHS Trust’s health services

Named Roseberry Park, the new £75m mental health development is situated at the St Luke’s Hospital site in Middlesbrough. Operated by Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust the facility aims to provide a welcoming, therapeutic environment for service users and staff and forms a key component in modernising the Trust’s health services.

Believed to be the largest mental health project recently constructed in the UK, Roseberry Park was delivered under PFI by consortium members; John Laing, Laing O'Rourke, MAAP Architects, WSP Building and Desco. The facility comprises of 312 inpatient beds for mental health, learning disabilities and forensic services for adults and older people. The design focuses upon the individual patient experience, breaking down the accommodation into a number of ‘houses’ arranged around large activity gardens and courtyards to create an architecture of enclosure without fences.

Mungo Smith, MAAP director, said: “The challenge on a project of this size is to make an environment that is safe, legible and user friendly. The integration of architecture, art and landscape offers a range of experiences to support people in various stages of treatment and recovery.” John Ord, associate director of PFI projects at Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Roseberry Park is a key part of the trust’s plans to fundamentally modernise the way we provide services. The completed facility is truly impressive and has been designed to complement the excellent clinical care we provide.”
