Plans unveiled for Vietnam's newest pediatric hospital
VK STUDIO-dwp was proclaimed the winner of an international competition for a paediatric hospital in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province, Vietnam). The construction of this hospital is an initiative of the VinaCapital Foundation. This project aims to integrate international standards, including a ‘green’ philosophy, with respect for the Vietnamese cultural and medical traditions.
It will function in the Vinh Thai Development Project, a future township with an exceptional location on the banks of the Quan Truong River. In the design, the hospital floats over a typical Vietnamese landscape, creating covered and shaded spaces. The landscape prevails, forming a background for every perspective and view. It passes underneath the building, forming gardens and green patios with water features. As such, the building exceeds the stereotypical hospital architecture, posing in the landscape as a distinct element with a modest identity.
Hidden in this artificial landscape is the hot floor, with emergency services, medical imagery and operating theatres. Higher up, the public entrance level opens up to create exciting views of the sculptural landscape. A large covered plaza facilitates dealing with big fluctuations in the number of outpatients, typical in Vietnam.
The wards float as separate entities above shaded gardens, stimulating readability. Patient rooms are organised around an internal void, enabling daylight entry and natural cross ventilation with stack effect. The ward design has to be healing, protective and appealing to children, by using an extensive range of materials and colours and by introducing digital printing. Roof terraces and balconies offer views and space to walk and play.
Several sustainable measures will minimise the hospital’s footprint. In balance with available technology and affordability, this ‘green’ philosophy applies passive measurements, such as night cooling through thermal mass, structural awnings made of local material, e.g. bamboo, and rain water management with green roofs.
