New acute care facility for Orange County hospital

The goal of St. Joseph’s Health System was to establish Mission Hospital as the premier diagnostic and critical care facility in the Orange County, California region. The new Acute Care Tower expands the campus, and redefines the facility as a technologically advanced acute care center with high quality patient services, and an enhanced work atmosphere for staff.

The Tower design focuses on patient-centered design and next generation innovations in healthcare, including imaging, diagnostics and critical care services. The 100,000 sq ft Tower expands the hospital’s capacity with 24 medical/surgical beds, 20 ICU beds, a shelled floor, MRI, CT scanner, and nuclear medicine. The 24 private rooms offer expanded family areas and dedicated sleeping chairs for guests. Prominently located at the front of the Mission Hospital campus, the four-storey Tower creates a new entrance and modernised identity. It is connected to the existing hospital building with a 175-foot pedestrian bridge.

The Tower’s exterior features an exposed braced frame structural system that provides superior seismic performance in compliance with California’s stringent regulations for hospitals. The exterior appearance with its unique aluminum cladding conveys the state of the art medical services contained within. Strong radial shapes at both ends of the building and concentric framing along the front present a distinctive appearance from every angle.

Supporting the spiritual mission of the St. Joseph’s Health System, there is a 45-seat chapel and healing garden, easily accessible to patients, visitors and the community. The high concept cylindrical shaped chapel is topped with a suspended glass ceiling that creates a dramatic play of light and shadows.

This complex project was delivered ahead of schedule though utilisation of highly coordinated Building Information Modeling (BIM). The project received the Gold ConstrucTech Vision Award for the project’s high level of BIM innovations in the exterior design.
