Stantec creates a 'true architecture of wellness' rooted in reflection of and connection to the community

The City of Peterborough is located one and a half hours north east of Toronto, Ontario, in the Kawartha Region. Characterised by rolling hills, lakes and marshland, communities within the Kawarthas grew up around 'crossroads' or corners. The City of Peterborough evolved from one such crossroads.

The architectural concept is rooted in the Regional tradition of ‘crossroads’ – the intersection of two paths. The east-west path establishes the main entrance and lobby space, defined by a wall of locally quarried stone. Upon entrance from the west, visitors are immediately visually reconnected to the panoramic view of the city and regional geography to the east. A north-south path provides the prime circulation spine on all six levels. The six levels of program build around these two 'crossroad' elements leaving them legible as the principle organising device.

The geographical elevation of the site provides a commanding panoramic view of the city and regional geography beyond. The concept utilises this natural topography to break down the mass of the building, establishes an appropriate community scale and provides multi-level entrances to foster public connection.

Interior courtyards punctuate the building mass along the north-south circulation spine drawing natural light deep into the building, providing visual connection to the exterior and intuitive wayfinding. The north-south path passes through the courtyards, echoing the 'Bridges of Peterborough'.

Throughout the facility, glazing is used to connect patients, family, visitors and staff to the community. Floor to ceiling windows in patient rooms provide a full spectrum of views from ground to sky. Clinical program areas where patient visits are frequent or lengthy enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the seasonally changing landscape of the Kawarthas.

The materiality of the project, locally quarried stone, red clay brick with steel channel inserts and corrugated metal siding reflect the rich industrial traditions of the architecture of Peterborough. This together with the fundamental indoor / outdoor visual connections firmly roots this project in the community it serves.
