Wisconsin's new Cancer Center uses the 'hub' model to enable and enhance patient-centered care

Cannon Design helped Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin expand and consolidate all comprehensive cancer-related services in their new 508,000 sq ft Clinical Cancer Center. The facility has a freestanding presence, yet links back to the resources of the existing cancer program.

The design reflects the hospital’s desire for a simple, elegant building that reinforces the preeminence of their program, while cutting out weeks of patient-wait time by using the 'hub' model of specialist care. Within the 'hub' model, a specialist comes to the patient rather than the other way around, setting a new, exceptional standard of care that increases interaction among patients, caregivers and researchers.

A relatively simple building that excels in its responsiveness to its environment, the Center is laid out in a manner that makes transparent connections with existing public spaces, aiding wayfinding. The shape of the building responds to its surroundings: the existing buildings on campus, curvature of the road and natural sloping of the landscape. The southern side of the building is made of modular glass systems with varied transparencies, providing ample natural light and panoramic views of neighbouring wetlands.

The new building offers a Quality of Life Center, which provides social, financial, and spiritual support and a Wellness Center. Other services include pharmacy, a cafe, and underground, dedicated parking.
