Henning Larsen Architects completes reseach wing of the Norwegian Radium Hospital

The Norwegian Radium Hospital is situated in a hilly and densely built-up area in Ullern, Oslo. The extension project includes a separate research institution, an extension of the radiation therapy function and a unified development plan for the entire hospital.

A single volume comprises the research complex with two wings and a central atrium. The volume is fitted into the landscape on a bastion that contains all plant rooms, storage and parking on the three underground levels. The atrium and the workplaces in the wings afford a dramatic view of the Oslo Fjord to the south.

The building represents the cornerstone of a new development structure of the hospital focusing on flexibility in future heavy installations in laboratories with general as well as specialised functions such as gene and cell therapy. The meeting facilities for conferences and seminars as well as informal meetings among the researchers of the institution are essential to an innovative research environment.
