Having been involved and part of the team working on this project I am very glad to see it submitted for a WAN Award. As an intern architect it was a very rewarding and educational experience having been a part of the construction of this.

HOK's new addtion to the Peter Lougheed Centre helps accomodate a growing population

The extensive 398,265 sq ft expansion of Alberta Health Services’ Peter Lougheed Centre, completed in March 2008, provides Calgary’s rapidly growing population with an innovative and highly efficient facility that can accommodate more patients and aid in their recovery time, while offering staff a comfortable environment to carry out their complex and stressful responsibilities; a great space for patients and a workplace of choice.

The design assists with attracting / retaining staff and the reduction of patient recovery times by creating an environment that expresses a ‘home away from home’. Strong horizontal lines, expansive glazing and patterns - inspired by fields and crop arrangements - were used to echo the Calgary foothills and prairie landscape. The team was also proactive about community involvement, including them in design charettes to ensure their ideas were heard.

The project is a LEED® Certificate candidate and has many straightforward sustainable design features; natural rubber flooring, VOC free paint, paperless gypsum board, recycled content ceilings, PVC free guardrails, infection resistant fabrics, operable windows, and plenty of natural light in patient rooms. All planning was accomplished using evidence based design principles to limit travel distances, reduce square footage and limit the built form. Energy consumption was modeled extensively to design mechanical and electrical systems for long term energy savings vs. only looking at capital expenditure.

Wendy Dirksen, site director at the Peter Lougheed Centre, said: “The East Wing provides Alberta Health Services with an efficient way of delivering health care services to people living in and around Calgary. The building’s unique design features will help create a healthy and healing environment for both patients and staff, enhancing their health care experience. With the new standards that have been incorporated into the building’s design, the East Wing will also offer a safe environment to all those who stay, visit and work there. We are very excited to move into the space and continue to provide quality health care to Calgarians.”
