OMA tapped to design tall tower to celebrate Mexico’s independence
The Office of Metropolitan Architect has been commissioned by Groupo DANHOS to design Torre Bicentenario an 50-plus stories mixed-use tower that celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spain. To be located in the center of Mexico City, the tower when completed will be the tallest building in Latin America.
The building, which is to house offices, a site museum and gym as well as retail and restaurant space, is conceived by the stacking of two pyramidal forms. At the intersection of these forms is located a glass sky lobby that affords extensive views of the adjacent park and the city beyond.
The building, which is estimated to cost $600 million US, is scheduled to open in 2010 in time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.
