Three compete to design San Francisco’s tallest building

The Transbay Joint Power Authority (TJPA) has short–listed three design development teams to design a new, 100 million square foot transit center which when built could be San Francisco’s tallest building. The three competing architects, each teamed with a developer, are Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners; Skidmore Owings and Merrill and Pelli Clarke Pelli. The project, which is being touted as the “Grand Central Station of the West” includes three elements: a new modern regional transit center, a revamped rail line with accommodations for a future high-speed line, and a mixed-use tower that will house high-end residential, office, and retail space. It is expected that the tower element will provide financing for the rest of the project. All three teams have envisioned a skyline altering transparent glass and steel tower topping 1000 ft. The three competing schemes are on public view at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. The Authority's board will select a winning team on September 20.
