Medical Center expansion provides a new gateway and capacity for 100,000 annual patient visits

The 350,000 sq ft major expansion program to Stony Brook University Medical Center’s 2 million sq ft campus focuses on five major areas of care: neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), maternity, imaging, surgical services, and emergency. In addition, a striking new entrance and lobby breathes new life into the facility, improving wayfinding, circulation, and overall efficiency by providing access to all major clinical areas, multiple elevators and better connectivity to parking. In combination with modifications to campus circulation, this 'gateway' improves the arrival experience establishing a striking and distinctive image for the hospital.

The new surgical services double capacity in state-of-the-art operatories. Emergency services are designed as a flex-pod arrangement with modular design in independent HVAC zones for infection control. Women's and children's services are consolidated to new facilities on the main entry level, providing 10 LDRs, 36 postpartum beds, 12 antepartum beds, and a 36-bassinet NICU. Undersized operating rooms, inadequate support space, and inefficient patient flow in the surgery department are relieved with 10 new operating rooms directly adjacent to the existing 12-OR suite and a consolidated pre-op and recovery. The emergency department, previously accommodating 70,000 patient visits annually, triples ED space to expand capacity to as many as 100,000 visits per year. Distinct treatment areas allow for segregation of shock trauma, general medicine, and fast-track patients. The new ED also features a separate 10-bed observation unit.

Starting with the initial location and expression of the design, the design vision is one in which a series of lanterns are expressed along the façade that articulate entry points, create wayfinding clarity and create an environment which is inviting while at the same time acting as a unifying element to the campus. The new addition embraces the vehicular traffic as it enters the site and points the way to the new Ambulatory Care Pavilion which contains its own lantern at the end of this campus expression. The juxtaposition of the building wings themselves, open up their arms to receive visitors and patients creating a series of entry portals which are welcoming to all, a vision which was in stark contrast to the cold and impenetrable exterior of the existing building.

Designed to LEED® standards, the modernisation project leverages the sheltering effect of earth by building an addition into the rolling terrain. Surgery and emergency departments, placed below grade in the addition, receive daylight from a new atrium.
