David Morley Architects completes new office development at Loughborough University

The latest office development designed by David Morley Architects is SportPark at Loughborough University, the new home for the national governing bodies (NGB’s) of many sports. The scheme provides an innovative office environment enabling the NGB’s to share information and produce innovative approaches to best practice. Loughborough University invited representatives from the following NGB’s to sit on the client team to assist in the briefing process, including the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and Sports Coach UK.

The resulting design attempts to encourage and enable the integration of all occupants of the building and of the visitors to it, as part of a modernisation agenda allowing integration and freedom of movement. The striking red entrance was included to make use of the prominent positioning of the site on the campus at Loughborough University, situated at the main entrance. The scheme comprises four buildings with up to five storeys linked through glazed circulation spaces. The break out areas are varied and include small scale sports facilities and an outdoor sprint track. There is stream that runs through this part of the campus, which has been incorporated into the design and given space to flourish in order to encourage biodiversity.

SportPark won two awards at the Committed to Construction in East Midlands Awards this month. The project won in the categories Committed to Excellence and Quality, and Committed to Sustainability. It is the fifth project the practice has completed at Loughborough University. Previous schemes include the National Cricket Academy, a post-graduate centre, the new School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, and a 1,050-bed student residential scheme.
