Nigella Lawson and Alan Yentob open the newly transformed Jewish Museum London
The Jewish Museum London in Camden Town reopened on Tuesday 16th March after a £10 million redevelopment scheme by architects Long & Kentish. Writer, broadcaster and cookery expert Nigella Lawson and one of the museum’s patrons, Alan Yentob (Creative Director of the BBC) attended the launch of the newly transformed Jewish Museum London on Tuesday, ready to open its doors to the public on Wednesday 17th March.
The complete redevelopment has tripled the space available inside the building, allowing the museum to showcase its extensive collections and exhibitions on Jewish life and cultural diversity. The museum’s expansion and redevelopment was made possible following a £4.2m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other donations from trusts, funds and individuals. The main exhibition space within the redeveloped museum consists of four permanent galleries – Welcome Gallery, History: A British Story, Judaism: A Living Faith and The Holocaust Gallery. The redeveloped Jewish Museum London will also house a Changing Exhibitions Gallery, a 100-seat auditorium, an Education Space and a café and shop.
The new museum has been designed by Long & Kentish Architects, an award-winning practice who have a long history of developing museums and galleries including the British Library Centre for Conservation, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (Museum of the Year 2007) and the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. Long & Kentish Architects were able to triple the space inside the museum by combining its premises in Albert Street with an adjacent former piano factory.
