David Chipperfield Architects win Russian theatre competition

David Chipperfield Architects have won a competition to design a new auditorium and oversee the reconstruction of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre in Perm, Russia. Known as the Tchaikovsky Theatre, it is one of the most prominent opera houses in Russia and is situated in the Komsomolsky Park.

The original Tchaikovsky Theatre was a wooden building in Obvinskaya Street, however this burnt down in 1863. Its replacement was again a wooden structure which was later pulled down and the current stone building erected in its place between 1878 and 1880. The project will create a new 1,100 seat theatre, rehearsal spaces, and a foyer with restaurant and shop. The refurbishment of the old theatre (1878), which was extended in 1959, is also included. The project is commissioned by the Perm Region and is scheduled for completion in 2014.

Other practices involved in the competition were Avery Associates Architects (UK), Henning Larsen Architects (Denmark), Neutelings Riedijk Architects (Holland), PLP Architecture (UK) and Sergey Skuratov Architects (Russia).
