First phase of Piano-designed Los Angeles Art Museum unveiled

The Broad Contemporary Art Museum (BCAM), the first phase of a ten-year expansion and renovation project at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), will open in February 2008. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the BCAM is a new three-storey building that will house 60,0000 square feet of gallery space specifically dedicated to the display of art from 1945 to present. The building, which will be clad in Italian travertine and have a glass roof, will have one of the largest column free art spaces in the United States. Also opening in February is a new 8,100 square feet glass entrance pavilion, dubbed “the BP Grand Entrance” for its donor British Petroleum. The two projects are part of larger a multi-phased, multi million-dollar transformation project currently underway at LACMA.
