Abu Dhabi Education Council integrate sustainable architecture and interior spaces with technology, landscape, and environmental design
FXFOWLE’s design solution for the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) centres on creating a future generation of citizens ready and eager to contribute to a global society. A progressive approach to the suburban, Grades 10 to 12 school respects Abu Dhabi’s economic confidence and rich heritage and also creates a forward-looking campus that integrates sustainable architecture and interior spaces with technology, landscape, and environmental design.
The design creates a new campus, organised around a dominant east-west axis, which acknowledges the linearity of the region. The campus is centered on car-free indoor and outdoor common facilities in the middle of the site, which include a cafeteria, auditorium, athletic facilities, administrative offices, and drop-off zones for access to the school. Boys’ and girls’ educational sections are located on the east and west sides of the campus, respectively, and are separated by the common facilities. Classrooms are organised around five discreet departments, each with their own identity and tailored to the pedagogical needs of each gender. These 'academies' are connected to the common facilities by shaded walkways, creating a dynamic, interwoven ground-level experience for the students and teachers.
A stacked outdoor soccer field above the indoor common facilities provides an opportunity to design a unique architectural topography and also offers permanent shading to the structures below. The soccer field and green roofs are part of an integrated sustainable network and contribute to the project goal of Net Zero energy consumption. The campus is a progressive, unique environment conducive to learning.
