Austin Smith Lord go 'whisky galore' with new £40m Scottish distillery
Austin-Smith: Lord has applied to Moray Council for planning permission
for a new £40m distillery for Diageo, the world’s largest drinks company.
The firm, which owns brands such as Johnnie Walker, J&B, Smirnoff vodka and Gordon’s Gin have been working with Austin-Smith: Lord and Faber Maunsell to create Scotland's most environmentally friendly distillery.
The building, which will be built at Roseisle between Elgin and Forres, brings together old and new technology and will be the first new major distillery in over 30 years. The 3000 sqm building has been designed to be a “distillery of the future” and aims to be Scotland’s most environmentally friendly whisky production facility. The building will contain 14 traditional copper whisky stills and has been conceived as a series of identifiable volumes which reflect the three key functions of the distilling process;
mashing, fermentation and distilling. Being mainly an industrial process the
architectural challenge has been to design a building which reflects the distillery process function whilst attempting to break down the mass, scale and visual impact of the development to respond to its setting.
The building has been designed as a modern interpretation of the traditional still house and is similarly driven by a form which responds to the process requirements and the need to maximise natural ventilation and daylight. Functionally the building requires a ‘public face’ and presence to the main road as well as providing legibility and operational coherence internally.
