Lambrechts Bertinat Arquitectos complete the River Plate Coast Guard HQ in Uruguay
The Coast Guard HQ is strategically positioned at the entrance of the Port of Colonia, Uruguay, South America in a UNESCO World Heritage site of a 17th century colonial Portuguese walled settlement situated on the River Plate in front of Buenos Aries. The architects carefully chose timber cladding and local sandstone to echo the colours and textures of the river-side location and the extraordinary blood –red waters of the River Plate, and the ancient colonial heritage of this city. This landmark building acts like a beacon for the town and is an important visual reference in the river traffic between Argentina and Uruguay, making it one of the most significant statements of entry. The building performs a sculptured arrangement of planes and volumes differentiating the very diverse functions within: civil areas, offices and military activities. The predominant image is that of a civic building without any visible barrier or security element that could distort the relaxed atmosphere of the Coast Park linking the port and the walled city- main route for tourists and visitors.
