Planning sought for new neighbour to the now iconic event space
AEG Europe and architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands have submitted proposals to the
London Borough of Greenwich for a proposed four star 450-bed hotel and adjoining serviced
apartments, focused around a 3,000 sq m special event space with a spectacular triple-height
reception pavilion adjacent to The O2.
Situated on the north western tip of the Greenwich Peninsula, the hotel takes The O2 as
backdrop; the strong and carefully composed massing of the scheme arranges the primary
components into a tight collection of objects, maintaining visual permeability to The O2 from
western and southern approaches while expressing the individual functions of the building.
The prominent triple-height reception space is raised above ground, maximizing the spectacular
views across the River Thames towards Canary Wharf and The City. Its transparency contrasts
with the strong vertical expression of the hotel’s anodised aluminum and glass curtain walling
façade. A 40 by 75m clear-span ballroom is set to be the largest bespoke space of its kind in
London.
