World Cup 2010 Stadium in Polokwane reaches completion 

As the countdown begins for football's fiercest competition, South Africa's stadiums are shaping up in line with their deadline in just over 130 days time. The 45,000 seat Peter Mokaba World Cup Stadium which will be one of the key host venues for the Football World Cup in 2010 has now completed.

AFL Architects & local practice Prism, designed the stadium and its associated support facilities as a collaborative. The form of the largely concrete structure is inspired by the locally iconic Baobab tree, with the steel structure supporting the roof plane gathered together at each corner of the Stadium and supported by giant 'trunk' structures which accommodate vertical circulation ramps and service cores. A hierarchy of 'tree' structures runs through the scheme, emphasising the efficiency of the design through the repetition of elements.

The bowl is formed with four two tier stands, the lower tiers of which join at the corners creating a full bowl aesthetic with executive facilities accommodated in the West Stand, below which players, press, parking and support facilities are located. The site has been arranged to offer convenient access, parking and circulation for supporters attending both Football and Rugby fixtures as well as for Groups gathering for concerts and rallies.
