Collaborative Architecture completes avant-garde cafe

TOPOGRAPHY- 1 is a part of Collaborative Architecture’s ongoing research projects, in creating public spaces which are highly innovative and ‘out of the box’ interactive spaces.

This project is a collaborative effort by the practice and IIID (Institute of Indian Interior designers) as a part of INSIDE OUTSIDEMEGASHOW in Mumbai in 2008. IIID wanted the firm to design a chill-out space of 16 m X 13 m, where the public can relax, stop over for snacks during the expo.

The program guidelines were flexible to accommodate spatial innovation to a fair degree. The brief expected the space to be truly experimental, which challenges conventional design norms to generate new spatial ideas.

The design intent was to demonstrate the functional and perceptional efficacy of a conceptual space in the confines of a typical program.

The plan is a striking, yet extremely simple, straight forward layout with ‘strips’ running across the space. These strips turn and fold to become seating, table and lighting, all in one stretch to create the stunning TOPOGRAPHY.

The ‘light trees’, custom fabricated out of Ferrari fabric give an ephemeral and magical aura to the cafeteria and also complement the ‘horizontality’ of TOPOGRAPHY with its vertical vector.
