St. Louis Art Museum breaks ground on Chipperfield Expansion

Ground was broken on January 19th on a $130 million expansion project at the St. Louis Art Museum in Missouri. Designed by David Chipperfield, the project will add more than 200,000 sq ft of space to the existing museum including, greatly enhanced galleries and public space, a 300-car below grade parking garage, and a new fully accessible entrance on Fine Arts Drive. To be located to the east and south of the original museum building, the addition will be finished in dark polished concrete and have skylights and floor to ceiling windows.

As part of the project, Chipperfield will also rework the original museum building. Designed by Cass Gilbert as a temporary pavilion for the 1904 World’s Fair, it is need of a substantive overhaul to properly function as a 21st Century art museum.

The Museum will remain open throughout its two-year construction.
