A dialogue between the natural and built environment
This private residence was designed to blend into the hillside of a seven-and-a-half acre lot. The young couple’s program required a home for their children and guests and came with challenges. With local restrictive height limitations, the design approach was to embrace incredible views, incorporate a sense of expansive space and yet integrate the house, site and privacy offered. Sensitivity to place contributes to successful integration of design elements such as a reverse sloped roof and large glazed openings. The roof’s flatter pitch allows for higher ceilings in the main living spaces - giving a sense of openness, and the slope lends to low-profile private areas, all while maintaining a flow with the topography of the site. The transparency provides the desired views opening up spaces and creating a seamless transition between inside and outside. These responses to the site create a dramatic intercourse between the built and un-built environment.
