Chinese New Year celebrated in Sydney with two origami tigers
Sydney's Customs House is soon to become home to two fierce felines designed by innovative architecture firm LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) as decoration for the Australian celebrations of Chinese New Year. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger and LAVA's literal approach to the project sees the surprisingly complex figures brought to life by geometric folds - also known as origami, or in Chinese 'zhezhi'.
The design of the 2.5 m high, 7 m long cats fuses the tradition of lantern making with cutting edge design and fabrication technology, bringing tradition and innovation, east and west together. Made of fully recyclable materials, aluminium and barrisol, the tigers are brought to life with low energy LED lighting.
The Origami Tigers will be sitting pretty on the forecourt of Custom's House from 11 Feb to 14 March.
