Kamermans & Co completes holiday home with a view to permanent residence
The house is located in a new part of an exiting beach resort one hrs drive north of
Auckland. The new subdivision has a row of beach front sites with another row of sites
behind. This second row site has its own access strip to the beach which, together with
the building restriction setbacks along the side boundaries of the access strip creates a
(future) viewing corridor to the beach and the bay.
To ensure the best use of this viewing corridor was a key element in the brief and
concept design.
The maximum height permitted for the second row houses is higher than for the front row
so from the upper level one could have a wide view over the top of the front row houses.
The main living, dining and kitchen space as well as the covered terrace were located in a
wedge shape elevated structure looking down the viewing corridor, like a camera lens.
The master bedroom with sitting area was placed in an oval shape structure above the
kitchen / dinning area to capture the views over the top of the future front row houses.
The remaining four bedrooms, garage, laundry and bathrooms are located in a cube shape
structure that is linked to the wedge by the stairwell in the oval.
These different functions of the house were given their own shape and materials,
resulting in a sculptural composition; stained timber 'wedge', colorsteel 'oval' and a plasterfinish 'cube'.
Kamermans & Co Architects also did the interior design as well as the landscape design
of a 'native dune' style garden with plant colours to complement the house colours.
The interior design included K&Co designed sofa's, coffee tables, dining table,
audio / visual cabinet, barstools, bedside tables and bed heads.
