JCY completes new residential community that preserves the unique local character

The secluded region of Yallingup in the south-west of Western Australia ‘has a unique and special character widely recognised by residents and visitors alike’ and strong concerns exists amongst the community ‘for the preservation of this character’. The design for the grouped dwelling located in Elsegood Avenue, encompasses two identically planned dwellings orientated east-west down a steep ward sloping site with a physical separation between the front entries, to create the appearance of two houses when viewed from the street.

Each dwelling has been designed separated by wide, deep revealed courtyards along the northern and southern elevations, centred around living spaces and private outlooks from bedrooms and ensuites, serving to reduce building mass and provide good visual separation to the building’s long high elevation. Private courtyards and niches provide a solitary domain to relax, bathe and cleanse mind and body within a secluded and intimate garden sanctuary, allowing the occupants to retire from the more active zones of the house. The site naturally falls steeply away from the street towards the west and the houses have been designed to respond to the natural contours, with split level planning and surrounding landscaping features and low level foliage following the natural fall of the property.

The development combines an architectural style responsive to the natural typography and the material pallet and composition is synonymous with coastal architectural flavour; providing diversity within the elevations, complimenting the natural landscape and the lightweight architectural style whilst providing this project with an ‘individual identity’ to the neighbouring houses, yet consciously and respectfully embracing the style, flavour and sensitivities of this unique south-west settlement.
