Robert Mills Architects completes luxury family house in Melbourne

Verdant Avenue perfectly showcases this firm's aesthetic of form, function and detail alongside nature at its finest. Committed to exploring all things new, the client‘s open brief commissioned a luxurious, contemporary inner city family home. The result is this brand new tri-level expression of modernist living.

The clients' love of entertaining and their extensive artwork collection was the inspiration for the large gallery style open floor plan; and clean palette of white ceiling and walls and timber floors throughout. An 80-year-old pin oak tree serves as the focal point for the ground floor living and first floor bedroom areas, whilst dominating the second floor library and terrace. A striking 3.5 metre wide sculptural staircase anchors ground to first and second floors, linking all living areas and offering a contrast to the rectangular design and a division to the open space.

The 3.5 metre ceiling glass walls and sliding doors connect the kitchen and living spaces to the garden and 25 metre lap pool outside. Motorised oversize exterior window louvers provide light and ventilation to the entire home. The design has applied smart energy efficient principles with natural light throughout the home and a smart lighting system which illuminates the outdoor areas artificially when necessary.

The ground floor is largely devoted to the kitchen, living and dining area, with a powder room, bathroom, study, laundry, drying room and cellar. The first level is home to the master bedroom and open ensuite, and further 3 bedrooms each with ensuite; plus a living/entertainment zone for the children and a 4 car garage at the rear. A theatre and library room with extensive city views, sit quietly at the top of the ribbon staircase on the second floor. The inclination of the land posed as a challenge initially, however became a key part of the design, allowing entry at the front to the ground level and entry at the rear to the first level garage.

Dispelling the myth that sustainable architecture means sacrificing glamour and luxury, Verdant Avenue minimises its footprint on the land by embracing its external landscape, whilst still celebrating a love for opulent detailing.
