Award Entry

Software based controller for dynamic lighting in architectural, themed entertainment, hospitality, retail, and museum applications

Butler XT was used in the YAS Hotel, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to control the complex LED lighting on the curvilinear grid-shell covered with over 5,300 diamond-shaped steel panels, containing nearly 5000 RGBW LED fixtures. Thirty two e:cue BUTLER XTs, RDM (Remote Device Management) capable, provide bidirectional communication between the LED lighting on the grid-shell and e:cue’s CONTROL SERVER for status monitoring of LEDs. The system sends status reports to building management and automatically adjusts the intensity of LEDs to prevent overheating. This feature was crucial for the success of the project since light source temperature is a big issue in the desert climate of Abu Dhabi where temperatures can reach 60°C in the summertime.

RDM capability of the Butler XT provides the real-time feedback of the junction temperature of the LED chips to adjust output based on manufacturer approved temperature variance.
