Zwarts & Jansma receive first commission in India
Dutch architecture firm Zwarts & Jansma has been commissioned to create a masterplan for the new Kharadi neighbourhood on the outskirts of Pune. With 5 million inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in India. Shops, apartments, offices and leisure facilities are planned for an area covering six hectares.
The new neighbourhood will be segmented into distinctive plots. One part will contain cinemas, shops, clubs and other leisure facilities aimed at a younger audience. Adjacent is a business area with offices and shops. A creek will cut through the third, large area. Shops and a small business section will be situated on one bank, while the other side will con¬tain mainly family homes and an open square with an amphitheatre. The density, high along the main road, decreases towards the river. There, the development will be open and peaceful.
Pune has a humid and hot climate with heavy rains. Canopies will be constructed to protect inhabitants from the sun and rain, act as a buffer for rain water and will be covered in energy-producing photovoltaic cells. Green roofs will also help buffer and filter precipitation.
The project is planned for completion in 2015.
