K2S Architects Ltd finish the master plan for an area between the city and the water front

After having won the open competition for the new extension of the city centre of Lahti in 2005, Helsinki based K2S Architects Ltd have just finished their master plan for an area between the centre of the city and the water front. In this urban plan that was developed in close cooperation with the city of Lahti, a site currently used as a bus station and parking area is transformed into a mixed use area featuring housing, commercial and public functions including an art museum. K2S's design refers to the grid structure of the city centre, but the blocks are shaped more freely. Between the three storeys high volumes, a square-like pedestrian street forms a somewhat secluded yet inviting connection between the centre and the lake. The base of the blocks will be cladded in wood, while on top of this base a total of nine lantern-like towers will be placed. Based on this master plan, the city of Lahti will update their detailed city plan. Construction of the project is expected to start in 2009.
