BVN completes residential development for twin houses

Boolarong & Kinkabool is a development for two small detached beach houses on an elevated site at ‘Point Lookout’, on North Stradbroke Island, off the coast of Brisbane in South East Queensland, Australia. The two houses are generally identical with differences only occurring in response to the particular site location including topography.

Externally the buildings are finished with sand coloured terracotta tiles with a matt finish, the walls are an oblique reference to the light coloured painted fibre cement sheeting used on traditional houses in the older part of Point Lookout. Windows and a large outdoor living area employ narrow stained timber batten screens which can be adjusted for privacy and outlook. The interiors are finished with local Blackbutt hardwood flooring and Hoop Pine plywood walls, ceilings and joinery for a simple and elemental character.

The design of the houses and the landscape employ a number of key sustainable design strategies to ensure minimum maintenance, low energy use, low water use and low embodied energy.
