Phase 1 of 74 acre health village completes 4 months ahead of schedule
Phase I of the $600 million (US) McLaren Health Care Village - which will involve the construction of 1.2 million sq ft of healthcare, retail and office components over the next 10 to 12 years - has been completed four months early. Master planned by the Chicago office of RTKL, this segment of the project features the Great Lakes Cancer Institute and the Clarkston Medical Building.
“This project is a delicate balance that aims to satisfy project owner McLaren Health Care Corporation, the government of Independence Township, and nearby residents who will utilize the development,” said Daniel C. White, RTKL’s vice president in charge of the project. “Clarkston residents are experiencing the beginnings of what will become the town center, while the township itself is starting to benefit from the tax revenues generated by the for-profit segments of the project. By using healthcare facilities to anchor the development, we are supplying essential services now and paving the way for more mixed-use components.”
These projects are all part of a 74-acre village that applies urban planning concepts to create a mixed-use development with eight healthcare facilities and several retail/office components, totaling 1.2 million sq ft.
The $15 million Great Lakes Cancer Institute was designed to connect to the environment through a two-storey atrium that fills the public spaces with natural light. On the second floor, private and semi-private infusion rooms provide views to the healing garden.
Also completed under phase I, the Clarkston Medical Building includes a 24-hour urgent care center, an outpatient surgical center, a sleep center and a sports therapy facility that’s open to the public. The main hospital will be built as phase II of the plan; phase III will include construction of a heart center, affiliated health science buildings and a possible hospital expansion.
