Michigan to build Hadid museum
The Board of Trustees at Michigan State University today approved the construction of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. The University will break ground on the building on 16 March 2010 with construction expected to complete in 2012.
Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad is an alumnus of MSU and has recently made news with his plans to build a museum in California to house his private art collection and foundation. In 2007, Broad and his wife donated $18.5 million toward the construction of this museum and gave an additional $7.5 million to commission a signature sculpture and to provide funding for acquisitions, operations and endowment. It is the largest gift the University has ever received.
Hadid was selected as the winner of an international competition for the Broad Art Museum in January 2008.
