Vodafone's new call centre exceeds expectations

Vodafone Property Group has unveiled its new call centre in Stoke-on-Trent, designed by RPS Architects. Created specifically to encourage ease of communication between employees, upon delivery the interior has proved more exciting than the plans initially promised. Due to the current climate, it was essential that the space was flexible and could easily be converted into office space if and when Vodafone needed to sell.

The building has a totally recyclable shell made of steel and mineral wool. The open plan design of the two large halls, capable of housing 7 five-a-side football pitches, allows a huge amount of flexible space to arrange the team groups in various different formats. The design caters for 450 people in the South Hall and 475 in the North Hall. The building is approximately 45m wide surmounted by an asymmetrical curved roof which is higher to one side to accommodate ancillary first floor accommodation. Amenities such as a café and breakout areas are provided for staff. From the café, large slot windows have been provided giving dramatic views to the workspaces. The red breakout pods have fully fitted kitchen areas with seating and vending machines. Showers and changing facilities were considered essential to cater for bicycle users and midday joggers. A shop provides workers with various necessities.

Daylight-controlled lighting is fitted in the main halls to maximise the use of natural daylight and minimize the use of electric lighting and stored rainwater is used to flush the toilets. RPS modelled the acoustics, crucially important in large open-plan areas, and was responsible for the external landscaping – with a courtyard and recreation areas that enhance the external features of the building.

Employees seem very impressed with the building, expressing views such as, "Great building, really proud to work for Vodafone. Can't wait to move in!”, "Outstanding!", "Fantastic, love the building inside and out!”
