Contemporary villa completes to neighbour Edinburgh gentry

Just minutes down the road from Edinburgh's famous Morningside area, home to many of the city's gentry including Harry Potter author JK Rowling, Allan Murray Architects has completed a residential villa that could raise a few eyebrows.

In the Bruntsfield area, the contemporary design stands defiant of the surrounding detached Victorian houses, but replaces an unlisted bungalow that was constructed out of prefabricated concrete panels.

Offering little insulation and an unwelcoming space, the redundant bungalow was replaced by a quintessentially minimalist abode, clad in buff sandstone and black zinc panels with a fully glazed rear elevation. A large frameless glass wall incorporating sliding doors offers an extensive view of the, as yet, unlandscaped garden from the living room, dining room and kitchen and the internal arrangement of the rooms is open plan, with spaces divided by large menhir walls.

A sleek steel, glass and timber staircase with a large skylight above leads to the first floor level. White walls, laminated floors and spotlights complete the villa to create what could, one day, be considered the new traditional housing model.
