Tony Owen Partners rebuilds Sydney's Blakehurst Club

Tony Owen Partners have just completed the Blakehurst Sports Club on the waterfront in Kyle Bay, Sydney. The club was destroyed by fire a year ago. Tony Owen Partners was engaged to replace the club with a new building giving them an opportunity to create a completely new structure on the site and take advantage of the magnificent waterfront views and location.

The upper level contains the lounge area, bistro and gaming area as well as a large outdoor terrace area. The lower level consists of the restaurant, function facilities and some club offices and change rooms.

The inspiration from the project came from the original gull wing design of the old roof that was destroyed in the fire. We took this principle and accentuated the possibilities. The new roof rises out of the remaining 1930’s heritage brick walls on the ground floor and soars from the site as if taking off across the water.

The distinctive ceiling is based on the wing structure of the wetland insects found on the site. In contrast to the original building which had low, dark ceilings, the new lounge and bistro areas on this level have been opened up to create a light and airy space that opens up to the outside.
