New learning hub for university receives planning approval

A design by architecture firm RMJM has been granted planning approval from Sheffield City Council. The design is for a new Learning Hub within the existing Grade II listed Edwardian wing of the University of Sheffield situated on the wider Jessop Hospital site, which ultimately connects the two separate nodes of the University campus as set out in the RMJM development framework of 2002.

The architects from RMJM’s Cambridge studio were faced with the dual challenges of conversion and conservation. Both the refurbishment and the new extension aim to unite the variety of the surrounding buildings, contemporary and historical, whilst establishing unequivocally the building’s own architectural identity.

The Edwardian wing will provide high quality flexible learning and teaching spaces in which students will be enabled to learn through a variety of interactive experiences with both academic staff and each other. Students will be able to access central learning and teaching support facilities to enhance their personal development.

RMJM’s lead designer for the Learning Hub, Murdoch Cameron said: “We are delighted to see this redundant building being brought back to life. It has been one of our aspirations that the ‘transformation’ of the existing wing is sympathetic to the original Edwardian architecture, whilst also delivering an outstanding learning experience to future students.”

Neil Cameron, Director of Estates at the University of Sheffield, said: "This refurbishment is an important project in the estate strategy which underpins the ongoing improvement in the University’s learning and teaching infrastructure."
