Community Hospital promotes wellbeing through design
Johnson Community Hospital, a new £23m facility commissioned as part of the Three Shires Batch PFI scheme, has officially opened in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Designed by Watkins Gray International, the 8,500 sq m sustainable landmark building has been delivered to Lincolnshire NHS Primary Care Trust. The 32-bed hospital will consolidate services that are currently offered across a number of locations into one modern facility.
The eye-catching and welcoming main entrance canopy, designed with curved perforated walls and leaf-like roof lights, relieves anxiety and draws people into the light and airy double height atrium at the heart of the hospital. The interior design of this atrium reflects the outdoors by adopting an earthy colour scheme, which, along with the curved cafe area and the soft furnishings, creates the appearance and ambience of a hotel foyer rather than a hospital entrance area.
Project architect Oana Gavriliu, comments: “We have used a harmonious architectural vocabulary that allows separate identities for different departments while maintaining the unity of the overall design. We’re committed to delivering high quality design solutions within budget, and this is a perfect example of this approach.”
The sustainable facility has been commended for its consideration to the environment, including the protection and preservation of natural habitats in and around the site. Natural ventilation has been maximized through the hospital’s central courtyards, while coated windows reduce heat loss, with energy efficient lighting and high efficient, low emission gas fired boiler system also used. Meanwhile, the materials specified were deliberately chosen to increase the life span of the building while reducing maintenance costs.
Len Hartley, Project Manager for NHS Lincolnshire enthused: “The design of our new community hospital is ultra modern which provides a very warm and welcoming experience to any hospital visit. It looks and feels exciting, more like a modern five star hotel, yet it provides an exciting environment in which our staff are proud to work and our patients expectations are delivered. It is without doubt a superb building the Trust are very proud of.”
