NY City approves glass tower for Meatpacking District
The New York City Board of Standards and Appeals has granted developer Romanoff Equities five variances to build a 10-storey glass tower on a prime site in the fashionable Meatpacking District next to the High Line. The approval which delighted many, including Diane von Furstenberg, a long time tenant in the District who spoke on the project’s behalf, was met with opposition from the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, which characterized the project as out of scale for the neighbourhood and won a small victory getting its height reduced from twelve stories to ten.
Designed by Jamie Carpenter of James Carpenter Design Associates with Randy Gerner of Gerner, Kronick + Valcarcel, the building will replace a former meatpacking plant and house 116,000 square feet of retail, showroom and office space.
Carpenter, who is known for explorations in structural glass and light and is the designer of such projects as the cast glass water feature in the Hearst building and the curtain wall for 7 World Trade Center, was charged with designing a simple, elegant glass building of timeless quality that reflects the neighbourhood’s history and vitality. The response is a luminous, loft-like, column free building that reflects the District’s industrial origins in its materials which are to include terra cotta, zinc and perforated metals in a range of subtle grays, along with concrete and glass.
To be situated between the Standard Hotel and the Diane von Furstenberg Studio amidst a coterie of luxury retailers including Tory Burch, Vince, Zadig and Voltaire, and Generra, Daryl Romanoff said he is confident the building’s unique design and location will draw a high end fashion tenant who wants to establish its headquarters there.
