Gareth Hoskins wins coveted Aberdeen Art Gallery commission

Gareth Hoskins Architects has won a prestigious competition for the major redevelopment of the Grade A listed Aberdeen Art Gallery. The project will see the adaptation of the 1885 A Marshall Mackenzie designed building for the modern needs of its extensive collection.

Aberdeen is affectionately known as the Granite City and true to the rest of the city, the original structure was constructed of the glistening stone making the building dynamically change throughout the day with the light. GHA's £20million addition will maintain the original facade and many internal features adding height with a glazed atrium roof for additional gallery space and an extension to the rear providing back of house facilities.

Part funded by the McBey Trust, the renovations will also see the reconfiguration of the existing Gallery and Cowdray Hall to provide improved access, circulation and facilities.

The Aberdeen Art Gallery collections cover both applied and fine arts and range from the predominantly figurative MacDonald collection to contemporary works. The designs, in particular the glazed roof hope to achieve a new prominence for the significant cultural landmark.

The proposals will be now be explored and tested further through an initial design study with Gallery staff and the public to then develop a detailed scheme through to completion. GHA head up a team consisting of Buro Happold, Davis Langdon, Spiers & Major, Andrew Wright (conservation architect/advisor) and Ailsa PM.
